NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home Course: Teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense.
This is approximately 8 Hour course. Students should expect to shoot approximately 100 rounds of ammunition. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.(Lesson Plan, revised 06/10)
NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law, and experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm) to maximize what can be learned from this course. Proof of shooting experience can be one of the following: NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.
You are required to bring a pistol to attend this class, along with ammunition, eye and ear protection. Round count is 100rds minimum (2 boxes of 50). Using the NRA training method of Total Participant Involvement, this basic course provides hands-on learning opportunities in the following areas:
- Safe firearm handling
- Selection of firearm & ammunition for home defense use
- Defensive shooting fundamentals and an opportunity to develop them on the range
- Defensive shooting skills & drills
- Legal aspects of use of firearms for defense & use of deadly force
Certificates are awarded to participants who successfully complete this basic course. This course, and all NRA courses stress the Three Fundamentals of Safe Gun Handling:
1. ALWAYS keep the gun pointed in a safe direction.
2. ALWAYS keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot.
3. ALWAYS keep the gun unloaded until ready to use.
This course is approximately 8 hours across two evenings or a full day depending on scheduling.
Range and classroom facilities used are varied depending on availability and course content. Courses are co-ed unless specifically scheduled and/or arranged otherwise.
